About Daniel

Daniel Whibley is a professional double bass player, composer and arranger, working with many of the UK’s leading orchestras. In 2006 Daniel joined the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, and in 2011 became a member of the BBC Philharmonic. In the 1990s, whilst living and working in Dublin, Daniel worked with many film composers including Elmer Bernstein, Randy Newman and George Fenton.

As a writer and arranger, Daniel’s music is heard live by around 30,000-60,000 people each year as part of Carrot Productions’ Snowman Tour and Wallace & Gromit In Concert. He is regularly commissioned by the BBC – including music for family concerts, documentaries and Cbeebies – and is often featured on BBC Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, 5Live and 6Music.

As well as writing for the Philharmonic, Daniel also writes for Carrot Productions, a production company he and his wife, Rachel, founded in 2014. Carrot Productions specialise in creating exciting and engaging family concerts, and are the world’s leading performers of both The Snowman and Wallace & Gromit. Daniel creates works to be played alongside The Snowman film, often writing the narration as well as the score.

In 2018 Daniel was commissioned by Aardman to produce scores and parts for all four Wallace & Gromit films. It proved to be an interesting project, as few scores existed, and sometimes only with limited handwritten notes and cues from the original film sessions. Aardman also commissioned him to create additional material for Wallace & Gromit In Concert, and more recently to accompany a brand new Shaun the Sheep compilation film.

Daniel’s arranging skills music have been in great demand during the recent lockdown, notably for the BBC Philharmonic’s #BBCPhilAtHome initiative, with orchestral arrangements of Easter Parade, We’ll Meet Again and David Bowie’s Sound and Vision completed to date, and many more projects in the pipeline.
